DEFIANCE, Ohio – The fourth of the 2010-11 Moats Enterprises “Sunday at the Center” concerts sponsored by the Defiance Community Cultural Commission will be held Sunday, January 16, at 7 P.M. at the Arts and Media Center, 319 Wayne. The featured group is the Salzedo Harp Duo, composed of two principal harpists from the Toledo and the Akron symphonies. Series sponsors are the State Bank and Trust Co., Renovators Commercial, Inc., and Service Master. The event is presented in memory of Keith and Mary Tustison by their family.
Nancy Lendrim and Jody Guinn have performed together for over twenty-five years. Both studied at the Cleveland Institute of Music and the Salzedo School in Camden, Maine. They began their collaboration originally to promote the music of Carlos Salzedo, along the way discovering a number of his unpublished works. The duo has performed at conferences of the American Harp Society and the World Harp Congress and has given concerts and master classes throughout the nation.
Through the Toledo Symphony, with which Lendrim is associated, the duo was awarded a Mellon Foundation grant in 2000 to research and prepare Salzedo’s music for public performance. They have recorded “Short Stories: A Collection of Music for Two Harps” and have recently released a second CD. Their repertoire has expanded to include works of other 20th-century French composers and a variety of contemporary compositions.
Lendrim is a faculty member at the University of Toledo, Heidelberg College, and the Saratoga Harp Colony. In addition to performing with the Akron Symphony and the Opera Cleveland Orchestra, Guinn teaches at Westminster College in Pennsylvania and Baldwin-Wallace College. Both artists have performed with the Cleveland and the Philadelphia orchestras and maintain an active roster of private students.
Tickets for the Salzedo Harp Duo are available at the door at $10.00.
