DC alumnus Don Smith ’71, Continental, was inducted May 24 into the Ohio Senior Citizens Hall of Fame during a special ceremony in Columbus. Don swims to raise money and awareness for Diabetes Youth Services, the only nonprofit organization in a 34-county region that provides type 1 diabetes education, programs and support to children and their families.

Defiance College Professor Emeritus Randall Buchman will be one of the key scholars taking part in an Ohio Historical Society (OHS) project to increase and share knowledge about Midwestern Native American tribes with community college educators. The OHS has received a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, and is one of only three national awards the NEH made this year under the Bridging Cultures for Community Colleges program.

The thirteenth annual Empty Bowls event to benefit the PATH Center is planned for Thursday, Feb. 21, from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at Knights of Columbus Hall, 111 Elliott Road. The project is jointly sponsored by the Defiance College Social Work Organization and DC art department. The goal is to raise funds to help feed the hungry, with all proceeds going to the PATH Center.

A Defiance College alumnus will play a big role in Super Bowl 2013 in New Orleans. Don Martindale, inside linebackers coach for the Super Bowl-bound Baltimore Ravens, graduated from Defiance College with a bachelor’s degree in business education after playing linebacker with the Yellow Jackets. His coaching career began as an assistant at DC in the late 1980s.

Defiance College and Mercy Children’s Hospital Foundation will sponsor Dance Marathon on Nov. 9 from 5 p.m. – 1 a.m. at the Weaner Community Center, McMaster gymnasium. Dance Marathon is a fun filled night where students raise money and awareness for Toledo’s Mercy Children’s Hospital and their efforts to combat pediatric cancer.

The Defiance College football team paid special recognition to local resident Betty Mekus for all of the delectable cookies she has baked for them during their time as DC student-athletes. Coach Sheehan and the team welcomed Betty to the football stadium last week to pose with them for photographs, and she arrived with boxes and boxes of cookies to share. Betty told a local reporter that she estimates she has baked between 400 and 500 dozen cookies for DC students in the past two years. Read The Crescent-News article here.
