Fall down Alice’s rabbit hole into a wonderland where the adventures are grand, the people distinctive, and the language wondrous strange. Become an English major at Defiance College.
One of the most important skills a student can derive from college is the ability to think and read critically. Facts or specific skills are fairly easily mastered. The ability, however, to organize a diverse collection of facts and ideas in thoughtful, inventive, and beneficial ways is a rare skill. Add to that the ability to clearly communicate meaningful and creative ideas to a diverse audience, and you have an English graduate who is ready to take on the challenges of a complex and changing world. Students deepen their knowledge of a variety of literature and grow their skills in critical thinking, writing, and interpretation.

Benefits of the Program
Progeny, the student-run Defiance College literary magazine, offers English majors a unique opportunity to do professional-style editing while on campus. Other opportunities sponsored by the English Department include museum and conference trips, the yearly spring Animarathon (anime festival) in Bowling Green, Ohio, the Defiance College Anime Club, and the Defiance College Cosplay Club. Students are invited to the annual SwampFire Retreat, which is organized by members of the English Department for professional writers and artists. At the conference and retreat, students work and present alongside professional scholars and creative writers. In addition, all graduating seniors in English get to add their pre-professional presentation at the Spring Arts & Humanities Symposium to their resumes.
Such experiences help make Defiance College English majors highly competitive in the
job market and positions them well for graduate school funding.
The English B.A. is deliberately designed to complement a second major in such areas
as design, communication studies, business administration, history, and religious studies. At Defiance, professors work closely with students to develop their thinking, writing,
and creative abilities in a context that is sensitive to current trends in the discipline
as well as to the larger, media-driven world.
Minor in English
The minor in English is a balance of literature and writing courses and totals 18
hours. It is designed to address the interests of students who enjoy literature and
the ideas that are part of literary study. The minor in English can be used to deepen
the critical thinking skills of students in pre-law and can benefit those whose professional
goals include well-styled language.

"If I had to pick my favorite part about the English major it is the professors. Their
goal is to see you be the best you can be and they push you to achieve that. They
make me feel like I am getting a great degree in English, even though it can be hard
at times. Even when things are difficult, they still always find a way to make things
exciting, fun, and worthwhile."
--Bianca Relue, Senior
"Since my husband was in the military, I attended four undergraduate colleges. I can say hands down that Defiance College provided the most comprehensive education, especially through the amazing faculty in the English Department. MC and Todd gave me an education that prepared me for graduate school, and provided a foundation in the discipline that is unparalleled, even in comparison to my graduate work."
--Eva English, DC Alumna
"The English department of Defiance College is a true community of creative souls
who have a passion for language arts of all sorts: creative writing, film, graphic
novels, anime, journalism. I am so privileged to collaborate with such talented students.
And so proud of how my students apply their amazing skills in classes, at conferences,
and then in truly interesting jobs."
