Conversational Chinese, Arabic, and Spanish to be offered during Fall SemesterDefiance College is offering Conversational Chinese, Conversational Arabic, and Conversational Spanish to students and the public as once-a-week classes during the upcoming fall semester. Coursework within the classes will enable participants to communicate at a basic level after just one semester while also learning about the culture of people who speak these languages.

DC receives Energy Efficiency Grant
Defiance College is the recipient of a $753,112 federal grant to improve energy efficiency. The announcement was made by Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland’s office. Defiance College is one of 14 Ohio recipients for a total of $10.7 million in grants through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act's Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant.

Defiance College only Ohio college to receive $50,000 grant from Walmart Foundation & CIC
Defiance College is the only college in Ohio among 30 colleges and universities across the country selected to receive grants under the second round of Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) and the Walmart Foundation’s Walmart College Success Awards.

recognizes student achievements
Defiance College held its annual Honors Day Convocation recently to recognize academic achievements of students. Special recognition was also given to faculty and staff.

Commencement Photos 2010
Defiance College awarded diplomas to 235 graduates on Sunday, May 9, during a noontime ceremony under bright blue skies on the campus colonnade. Dr. Vincent Harding, an associate of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., delivered the commencement address. Graduating senior Austin Kleman of Sidney, Ohio, was awarded the bronze Pilgrim Medal, the most prestigious award presented by the college, recognizing “reliance in self, pride in work, courage in conscience, strength in education, and faith in God.” Beverly Harrington was awarded the title Registrar Emerita upon her recent retirement after a 40-year career with the college. And in an emotional tribute to a long-time Defiance College administrator and faculty member, President Mark Gordon presented the family of Dean Emeritus Richard W. Stroede with a plaque recognizing establishment of the Richard W. Stroede Scholarship. Dr. Stroede was scheduled to appear at commencement ceremonies, but he had been battling a life-threatening illness for several months and died on Saturday, May 8. Son, Andrew Stroede, and daughter, Beth Moehle, accepted the plaque in honor of their father.

Defiance College Board Approves
Construction of New Field House

The Defiance College Board of Trustees voted its approval at the April board meeting for the College to move forward with construction of a multi-million dollar field house. This new approximately 80,000-square-foot facility will dramatically improve the College’s athletic facilities, providing significantly expanded indoor practice areas for the College’s athletic teams while also benefitting the entire Defiance community.

DC to offer Summer Detectives Camp
Defiance College’s forensic science, digital forensic science and criminal justice programs will conduct a three-day overnight summer camp for students in grades eight to eleventh on June 25-27.

DC program receives national coverage
A new program in which Defiance College students and faculty are collaborating with the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office in Detroit has received national media attention. An article on this new “cold case” project has been released on the Wall Street Journal Law Blog.

Defiance College Receives National Recognition for Community Service; Named to President’s Honor Roll
Defiance College has been named to the 2009 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, the highest federal recognition a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service-learning and civic engagement. This is the fourth consecutive year DC has been honored.
