The Hench Autism Studies Program and Defiance City Schools have partnered to establish an ASD high school classroom on the Defiance College Campus. This classroom has the capacity to serve six students and is designed as a life skills learning lab. That is, all of the academic/daily living skills that are targeted are taught in "real life" situations. For example, the students all participate in running a coffee cart business where they are responsible for budgeting/money management, making baked good and coffee, and selling their product/social skills. Students in the high school classroom have access to college facilities such as the Smart Fitness Center, dining hall and library. Defiance College undergraduates, many of whom are earning their autism studies minor, serve as peer mentors and job coaches for the high school students.
