Defiance College celebrates homecoming Oct. 19-25

DEFIANCE, Ohio – Defiance College will celebrate 2015 homecoming Oct. 19–25 with a “haunted” theme that will include awards, activities, presentations, and a reunion dinner.

Homecoming week starts with on-campus events for students, faculty, and staff.

The Defiance College Juried Alumni Art Exhibition reception runs 4:30-7 p.m. on Thursday at the Women’s Commission Art Gallery. There is no cost and the community is welcome to attend. Artwork is submitted from DC Alumni. The exhibit will hang until the first week of December.

Friday features a Halloween Ball dinner for alumni beginning at 5 p.m. in the Weaner Center Gymnasium. Awards will be presented at 7:15 p.m.

The Alumni Citation for Academic Excellence will be presented to Christine (Reeb) Wahl, Defiance, Ohio, class of 1972. Alumni Achievement Award recipients are Jerry Pierman, North Palm Beach, Fla., class of 1963, Donald Smith, Continental, Ohio, class of 1971, and Thomas Spiess, Fayette, Ohio, class of 1970. Nick Neiderhouse, Maumee, Ohio, 2005 graduate, will receive the Young Alumni Service Award. The Schauffler Legacy Award will be presented to James D. Clark, Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., class of 1975 and Marie (Yoder) Wenner, Columbia, Pa., class of 1954.

Saturday’s events begin at 8 a.m. with a Project 701 Trick-or-Treat walk/run at St. John United Church of Christ. Participants are encouraged to wear costumes and will receive candy along the route. Proceeds will go to Project 701.

The annual Alumni Varsity D breakfast on Saturday morning will honor 2015 Hall of Fame inductees and Coaches of the Year. Hall of Fame inductees include Stephanie (Nafziger) Fetter, Adrian, Mich., class of 1998, Paul “Larry” Flynn, Avon, Ohio, class of 1980, Maurice “Marv” Rotondo, Sylvania, Ohio, class of 1970, and Michael Bixel, Willoughby, Ohio, class of 1983. Inductees will take part in a bricklaying ceremony in front of the football stadium and will receive their plaques during a football halftime program.

Coaches of the Year for the 2014-2015 season include Tom Held, Defiance, Ohio, class of 1985, Bob Martin, Hatfield, Doncaster, class of 1976, Frank Kill, Lima, Ohio, class of 2002, Tim Held, Montgomery, Ohio, class of 1996, Jim Linder, Paulding, Ohio, class of 1989, Tim Shock, Hickville, Ohio, class of 2008, and Kenny Krouse, Bryan, Ohio, class of 1987.

A presidential breakfast will honor leadership as the newest McCann Circle members.

At 10:30 a.m., celebration will begin for the Mikula-Frey Science Initiative which renovates the greenhouse and builds an endowment to fund science student travel. Dr. Bernie Mikula and Helen Frey will be present.

Coronation of the 2015 homecoming king and queen and their court will take place at 1 p.m. prior to the Yellow Jackets football game against Earlham. Tailgating at the stadium will begin at 11 a.m. with kick off a 1:30 p.m.

Reunions will take place for the baseball and softball alumni, members of Greek fraternities and sororities, classes of 1965 and the 70s, and McMaster Scholars and Fellows.

Homecoming events conclude Sunday with a golf outing for alumni and friends where proceeds benefit the DC golf program.
