Welcome to the Defiance College Accounting program! The Accounting Program at Defiance College is based on sound accounting principles that progress from basic to advanced concepts. Defiance College has graduates who have been successful in local, regional, national, and international accounting positions. The accounting major at Defiance College is a professional program with a liberal arts emphasis.

Michael J. Gallagher
One point of differentiation is the wide range of experiential learning available from your sophomore year through graduation.

The accounting major covers all of the traditional areas of accounting and is expanding to include forensic accounting. Our new accounting professor is Richard Sealscott, CPA, CFE. He is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) and brings many years experience as an accounting professor and owner of a local CPA firm.

We encourage you to visit and discuss the opportunities a Defiance College education will provide for you, and to talk with Professor Sealscott, myself, current accounting students, or graduates of the program.

Michael J. Gallagher, Ph.D.
Associate Professor of Business

What is Accounting?

Accounting is the system of compiling and analyzing financial data to provide useful information to managers, owners, and creditors.  The accounting major is designed for those seeking to enter the public accounting profession or other accounting positions within organizations or companies.

Defiance College offers an innovative program that includes courses in communications, ethics, leadership, and technology.  On-the-job training is provided through internships and cooperative education experiences, along with service learning opportunities.

The accounting major is a professional program designed for students who want a solid foundation in all functional aspects of business plus specialized courses in Accounting.   Students may select the traditional four-year plan of study leading to a Bachelor of Arts Degree with a major in Accounting, or they may select the five-year program leading to a Master’s Degree in Business Administration.  Students who select the five-year plan will meet the 150 credit hour requirement necessary to sit for the CPA exam. What is Forensic Accounting?

The forensic accounting concentration will allow the student to focus on fraud prevention, detection, and deterrence.  www.ACFE.com

Opportunities

The accounting student will have the opportunity to engage in experiential learning activities, internships, developing a micro-lending program in Cambodia, or an accounting system for a local business.  These experiences will provide DC students with the skills, knowledge, and abilities that will broaden their perspectives in a diverse world.

After College — What’s Next?

Defiance College graduates are employed in local and regional CPA firms and businesses, as well as Fortune 500 companies.  In addition, the employment outlook is outstanding with potential opportunities with the federal government, the state of Ohio, other governmental and non-profit organizations, private industry, and financial networks.

“The Defiance College Accounting Curriculum gives you the advantage of gaining a broad perspective of different accounting fields.  Professor Gallagher helped prepare me for my career and gave excellent advice while I was working in my internship.  Another unique aspect of the Accounting program at Defiance is the ability to participate in service learning projects that incorporate your major.”

“My time at Defiance College has provided me with a number of wonderful opportunities.  The small classes have allowed me to make real connections with my professors who, in turn, take a personal interest   in the students.

My involvement in the Board of Directors with DC Ebiz, a number of other organizations, working in the Academic Resource Center, and being a four year member of The Defiance College Track and Field Team has taught me the importance of leadership, communication, and to be a problem solver.  The business program has allowed me to explore various possible business careers in non-profit accounting, taxation, financial advising, as well as governmental positions.  The two years I worked with the McMaster Initiative in Belize let me put my skills and knowledge both as an accountant and a businesswoman into practice in an international setting, which is the environment I ultimately want to work in.  Defiance College has strengthened my love of learning and my desire to grow as a person, and for that, I am extremely grateful.”
