spring concert April 12

DEFIANCE, Ohio – The Defiance College Choral Union and Chamber Singers will be presenting an evening of choral music on Saturday, April 12, at 7 p.m. The concert program is entitled The Road Home, and focuses on the journey of life and beyond. The event will be held at St. John United Church of Christ on Webster Street, Defiance.
The first half features the DC Choral Union performing Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem with chamber orchestra accompaniment and soloists Veronica Richer, Bryan; Ken Wetstein, Defiance; and Allen Blake, Defiance . The second half of the program will feature the 45 voice student ensemble, the DC Chamber Singers. Students will present a cappella octavos continuing the journey home with a focus on reflection and movement.
The concert will close with two combined numbers, The Road Home by Stephen Paulus and Gloria by Randol Alan Bass. Area high school students who participated in the fall Black Swamp Honors Choir will also be asked to join for the closing number.
The DC Choral Union consists of DC students, college personnel and community members from all over Northwest, Ohio. The group rehearses on Monday nights and is always happy to welcome new members. The DC Chamber Singers is an auditioned, mixed choral ensemble of approximately 45 DC students.
Conductor Andrew Schultz serves Defiance College as director of music programs. He leads the DC Chamber Singers, Choral Union, organizes the music for DC Players productions and teaches conducting and voice. Schultz also works closely with the instrumental ensembles to ensure the success of each music program presented at DC.
Schultz holds a bachelor of music and a bachelor of science in business administration from Ohio Northern University and dual master’s degrees from Bowling Green State University in music and business administration. He also serves as the artistic and performance series director for the Defiance Community Cultural Council, teaches private voice lessons and is in his seventh season as director of music at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Defiance.
The event is free and open to the public. A free-will offering will be taken at the end of the performance.
