Counseling Services

Office of Student Life

Welcome to the Counseling Center Resource Page. The Counseling Center at Defiance College offers a range of services to students, faculty and staff, and parents. The mission of the Center is to promote the psychological, educational and social well being of students so that they can feel and be successful in their lives, both here at Defiance and after graduation. The two primary services that can help students achieve this are counseling, and mental health education and prevention programs.

College life can be challenging and often stressful. These challenges can take many different forms: difficulties adjusting to college, confusion in deciding on a major or career path, struggles in relationships, or making friends or getting along with a roommate. Many students feel anxious, depressed, confused, or overwhelmed at some point during their college experience and need help dealing with feelings and problems that seem beyond their control.

For many of us, that help may come from friends, family members, significant others, etc. However, in some cases, help is needed from a trained professional. Counseling is a process that can help people identify more effective strategies both to cope with difficult situations and to achieve their goals. While some people who seek counseling have chronic emotional difficulties, most are dealing with normal life events and are simply in need of an objective listener - someone who doesn't judge and who can help them explore all their options to solve their problems or difficulties.

The Counseling Center provides free and confidential consultation, assessment, individual, group, couple's and family therapy to Defiance College students. The service that will best fit each student's need will be determined after an initial meeting with a therapist. How do I get started?

Even if you're not sure that counseling is right for you, feel free to come in for a one time consultation to see if there's a way that we can be helpful.

The Center also offers a wide range of outreach and prevention programming to the campus. Possible topics include but are not limited to: stress management, recognizing signs of depression, suicide prevention, eating and body image issues, recognizing and reducing shame triggers, goal setting and improving motivation, how to make change last, and alcohol and other drug use. Please call 419-783-2445 or e-mail kknight@defiance.edu to request a program or for further information about outreach and prevention services.
