Maurice Clarett to speak Feb. 19 at Defiance College
January 29, 2015
DEFIANCE, Ohio – Former Ohio State football player Maurice Clarett will be speaking at Defiance College on Thursday, Feb. 19. His 7 p.m. appearance at the Weaner Center on Webster Street is free and open to the public. He will be talking about his personal journey and the impact of sport on society.
Clarett was highly touted as one of the nation’s top running backs when he entered OSU in 2002. He had been named by USA Today as national player of the year and a Parade All-American. As a freshman at OSU, he set rushing and touchdown records. But, Clarett’s success was short-lived. After that freshman season, his official bio says, “he fell into a spiral of poor decisions” that ultimately landed him in prison for more than three years. Since his release in 2010, he has committed to restoring his reputation. He was featured in the ESPN documentary “Youngstown Boys,” has published a journal that chronicles his story, and is now conducting motivational speeches to schools, colleges, churches and business organizations.
Tickets for Clarett’s appearance at Defiance College are available (two per person) at the Defiance Hall reception desk or the McCann Student Center desk beginning Jan. 30. Free will donations for Special Olympics will be accepted on the night of the event.
The event is sponsored by the DC Exercise Science Program with support from the Sport Management Program, Athletic Training Education Program, DC Diversity Council, Office of Intercultural Relations, and Student Academic Support Services.
