Defiance College welcomes new full-time faculty to campus

DEFIANCE, Ohio – Three new full-time faculty members have been appointed at Defiance College in the fields of education, business, and nursing.
Dr. Carla Higgins came to Defiance College in June from Newark, Ohio. She became full-time
in July as an Assistant Professor of Education and the Director of Education. She
holds a Bachelor of Science in Education and a Master of Education in Early and Middle
Childhood education from the Ohio State University. Upon completion of those degrees,
Dr. Higgins taught third grade in Newark City Schools. She also worked in the school
system as a K-5 literacy coach and trained nationally at Lesley University in Cambridge,
Mass. While earning her Ph.D. in Teacher Education and Literacy from OSU in Columbus,
she taught courses in teacher education, provided research support, and supervised
teaching candidates in the greater Columbus area. Once she attained her Ph.D., Dr.
Higgins continued to teach courses and supervise teacher candidates at OSU Newark.
She served as a consultant for several school districts in Central Ohio. Currently,
she is a member of the Ohio Clinical Alliance Design team.
William Sholl started at Defiance College in January as an Assistant Professor of
Practice of Marketing. Originally from Paulding County, Sholl now resides in Toledo
and holds a Bachelor of Science in Business and Journalism from Bowling Green State
University and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Toledo.
Before joining the DC faculty full-time, Sholl served as an adjunct professor at Defiance
College, the University of Toledo, Lourdes University, and Owens Community College.
Prior to working in education, he spent more than 15 years in entrepreneurial organizations,
including ownership of a regional chain of retail outlets and a small regional advertising
agency. At present, Sholl is a member of the Defiance College Academic Assessment
Committee and the American Marketing Association.
Cheryl Hinojosa joined the Defiance College faculty in August as an Assistant Professor
of Nursing Practice and the Director of Nursing. She is an Advanced Practice Nurse
and Certified Nurse Midwife, holding a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Bowling
Green State University and a Master of Science in Nursing from Case Western Reserve
University (CWRU). While earning her Master’s degree, Hinojosa collected data for
a research team at CWRU which explored the health consequences of care giving. Throughout
her career, she has collaborated with local agencies as well as coordinated a Rural
Mobile Unit to aid rural migrants. She has worked to provide prenatal education and
care for monolingual women and their families. Hinojosa received recognition by Sigma
Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing and was an affiliate staff member
at Lima Memorial Hospital and Defiance Hospital. She has served as chairman of the
Hispanic Latino Health Coalition and co-chairman of the Northwest Ohio American College
of Nurse-Midwives Chapter. Additionally, she has served on speakers bureaus, gave
a presentation on television of "Common Pregnancy Concerns," and published an individual
midwife's birth log that highlighted benchmark collection data.
