DEFIANCE, Ohio – The Defiance College Women’s Commission Art Gallery is thrilled to present "Formations," a new exhibition featuring the work of painter Amy Casey. Her art will be on display from Feb. 12 through March 25.
A closing reception will be held from 4 - 6 p.m. at the gallery on Friday, March 25. Refreshments will be served. Work in the gallery is not for sale at this time.
A Cleveland-based painter, Casey works meticulously to create riveting, detailed words through acrylic on paper, panels, and prints. Her work features beautifully intricate, impossible architectural landscapes. She was awarded two Ohio Arts Council Individual Excellence Awards and the Cleveland Arts Prize as an emerging artist, among other honors.
She has exhibited her work at a variety of locations, including Cleveland, Chicago, New York City, San Francisco, Provincetown, and Los Angeles. Casey is a resident artist at Zygote Press in Cleveland, and has gallery representation through the Zg gallery in Chicago and Michael Foley in New York City.
Describing her inspiration for "Formations," Casey says:
"Like a lot of people, I watch the jumbled progress of the world with the usual mix of wonder and anxiety. Like possibly a few less people, I use that wonder and anxiety in an approach towards painting landscapes. Using elements of the places I spend time in as sort of building blocks, I've been building and rebuilding my own cityscapes. Some driving forces of these paintings include ideas of adaptation, growth, balance and the slow accumulation of parts to create a greater whole. While working, my thoughts often touch on communities and constructed environments: the mix of nature and artifice; how we as a community are held together or fall apart, and all of our vulnerabilities. I am curious about the resilience of life and our ability to keep going in the face of ever shifting circumstances."
The Women’s Commission Art Gallery is located on the DC campus in Dana Hall, Sessions Street. The gallery is open during business hours, 9 a.m. - 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, but will be closed the week of Spring Break, March 7 - 11. Please enter using the interior door, accessible through Dana Hall or the Art Center.
