Spring concerts announced at Defiance College

DEFIANCE, Ohio - A series of upcoming spring concerts have been announced from the Defiance College music programs and community ensembles.
The Defiance College Chamber Singers and Choral Union will present their spring choir concert titled “Spirituals and Part Songs” at 7 p.m. on Sunday, April 30, at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 400 Wayne Ave., Defiance.
The concert features “Spirituals” by famous composers in the beloved genre: Brazeal Dennard, Hall Johnson, Andre Thomas, and Moses Hogan. The choirs also present expressive performances of Randall Thompson's settings of Robert Frost poetry. During the concert, the choir will complete the Made the Difference Project, allowing the audience to post live on social media.
The Black Swamp Symphony Orchestra spring concert will be at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 28, at St. John United Church of Christ, 950 Webster St., Defiance. An encore performance will take place at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 30, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 601 Flatrock Dr., Paulding.
The Defiance College Community Band will present their spring band concert at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 2, at the Defiance Community Auditorium, 629 Arabella St, Defiance.
These performances are all free and open to the public. A free-will offering will be taken at the conclusion of each concert.
The DC Chamber Singers is an auditioned mixed choral ensemble, open to all students. This choir performs choral masterworks and premieres works by current composers. They sing music representing many styles, from each historical era. The Chamber Singers perform throughout northwest Ohio and tour within the states.
The Choral Union is a large choral ensemble open to students, college personnel, and community members, including music educators and music students. The choir performs varied works, involving a fall concert, Handel’s “Messiah,” and a large work each spring.
The combined choirs are under the direction of Dr. Jim Watson, Director of Music Programs, and the piano accompaniment of Hannah Watson. In addition, the choirs are accompanied by percussionist, Mark Cook.
The community orchestra is under the direction of Scott McIntosh and the community band is under co-directors Cathy Booth and Scott Rogers.
