Dr. Asma Abdel Halim to speak at Defiance College for women’s history month

DEFIANCE, Ohio - On Thursday, March 15, at 7:30 p.m., the campus of Defiance College will welcome Dr. Asma Abdel Halim to speak in Schomburg auditorium in observance of women’s history month. The topic will be women and Islam. This event is free and open to the public.
Dr. Asma Abdel Halim is Associate Professor at the University of Toledo, Department of Women's and Gender Studies. She graduated from the University of Khartoum with an LL.B. honors degree in common law and Sharia (Islamic) law, and later with a Masters in commercial law. She also earned a Masters in international affairs, African studies, and a Ph.D. in education from Ohio University.
Dr. Abdel Halim has been a human rights activist for the past 35 years. Her research is generally on Muslim women’s rights in Africa and other parts of the world, with a focus on feminism, women’s issues, legal and human rights issues under socio-cultural and religious mandates, and other related issues. She has authored and translated books, published articles, and presented at many domestic and international conferences.
