The following are awards that Defiance College students may earn through academic achievements. They are honored during an annual spring divisional award ceremony.
ARTS & HUMANITIES
This award is given to an undergraduate student who is enrolled or planning to enroll
at Defiance College that is planning to major in Christian ministry or to pursue a
graduate study in history or biblical studies.

This scholarship was established in 2010 as a tribute to Dick's leadership at Defiance
College, both in the classroom and as academic dean, his many contributions to the
arts in the Defiance community, as well as his music ministry at St. John United Church
of Christ.

they be from Defiance County or Defiance, Ohio.

A scholarship memorial to Dr. George P. Michaelides who served as president of Schauffler
College of Religious and Social Work in Cleveland and as director of the Schauffler
Division of Christian Education at the former Oberlin School of Theology. The Schauffler
Programs moved from Oberlin to the Defiance College in 1967. The award is given to
a social work or Christian education student who shows promise of outstanding career
achievement.

This award is given to an upperclassman who is majoring in American history. The student
must have a minimum of a 2.7 GPA to be eligible and should be selected by DC's history
faculty.

This award is given to an upperclassman that is planning to or is committed to a Communication
Art major and must have at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA.

must have attained a 3.0 GPA and be an active member of the Defiance College community.

BUSINESS, EDUCATION, & SOCIAL WORK
A memorial Scholarship was established by Mrs. Ruth Kurtz to honor the memory of her
husband. From 1953 until 1974, Mr. Kurtz served Defiance College as Chairman of the
Department of Education, Academic Dean, Dean of Student Academic Affairs, and Director
of Placements. He was a Defiance Rotary Member and Chair of the Northwest Ohio Community
Action Commission for five years. In 1974 he moved to Spring Arbor College in Michigan
to assume the responsibilities of Vice President of Academic Affairs.
This award is given to an upper-class student who is preparing for a teaching career.

The Arthur & Hope Knape scholarship fund was created by Mrs. Hope Knape to honor the
memory of her husband. As an Educator, Mr. Knape served as a teacher, principal and
administrator in the Lakewood, Ohio School District. He was a Professor of Education
at Defiance College beginning in 1971 and held that position until the time of his
death in 1983. Professor Knape was a member of the Defiance Rotary and served on the
board of the Defiance Senior Citizen's Housing, Inc. The award was renamed the Arthur
& Hope Knape award in Education by the Knapes' children to honor the memory of both
parents.
The award is given to an upper-class student who is majoring in Teacher Education, demonstrates qualities of skill in teaching and caring about students, demonstrates a need, and has attained a 2.5 or above GPA.

This scholarship was set up to promote the furtherance of education in the business
community, help a deserving business major finance their higher education at Defiance
College and promote the relationship between the Defiance Area Chamber of Commerce
and Defiance College.

George Isaac was a past member of the Defiance College Board of Trustees. He received
three honorary degrees: an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from the Medical College
of Ohio, an honorary doctor of Technical Letter from NW State, and an honorary Doctor
of Humane Letters from Defiance College. While George was unable to graduate from
college due to having to run the family business after his father's early death, he
highly valued education and created scholarship funds for deserving students.
This scholarship is awarded to a student of good moral integrity and character who possesses a good citizenship record. The student should be majoring in Business and must demonstrate a strong commitment to the free enterprise system.

This scholarship consists of income of an endowed fund. It shall be awarded annually
to an upper-class student of the Defiance College. The student must have established
herself or himself as a person who is highly motivated academically; who is clearly
in need of financial assistance and pursuing higher education, and who shows a great
deal of respect and thoughtful consideration for faculty and other students in the
Defiance community. The student should be recommended to the scholarship committee
of the Defiance College by a faculty person. The announcement of The Herbert S. Beane
Scholarship should be made annually at the Honors Day Convocation of the Defiance
College.

This award is a Business Administration award given in honor of Herbert Willett, who
matriculated at Defiance College around 1921. Herbert spent his life in the service
of human kind through his work with the Lend-Lease Program, the Marshall Plan, and
the International Cooperation Administration.

The Rothhar Assistantship in Education was established by the Rothhar family in memory
of four family members who attended Defiance College and collectively devoted over
100 years to the teaching profession in Ohio.
The award is given to an upper-class student who is majoring in Teacher Education, is a resident of Northwest Ohio, demonstrates a need, and has attained a 2.3 or above GPA.

This award is named in honor of the Schauffler College, whose endowment and legacy
have been part of Defiance College since 1967. It is given to a graduating senior
who is majoring in Social Work and who best exemplifies dedication and achievement
in the field of Social Work.

This award is given to a junior majoring in mathematics with the highest GPA out of
the junior class.
