Defiance College senior receives Charles J. Ping Service Award

DEFIANCE, Ohio – Defiance College graduating senior Brittany Coats of Montpelier, is one of 10 college and university students in Ohio to receive the Charles J. Ping Student Service Award for 2011-12 sponsored by Ohio Campus Compact.

She is also one of four students to receive a legacy grant of $500 from State Farm for outstanding college student leaders to award to a community partner. Coats chose the Belize Women’s Group to receive her grant monies.

Coats is majoring in biology with a minor in chemistry. She is a member of the Carolyn M. Small Honors Program and a project manager for the Project 701 Defiance Cares Free Clinic project. She was recipient of the William Rollin and Kay Marie Latchaw Prize in Chemistry in both her sophomore and junior years and was a McMaster Scholar to Cambodia in 2010 and 2011 and a Scholar to Belize in 2012.

The Charles J. Ping Award was designed to recognize and honor undergraduate students’ outstanding leadership and contributions to community service on their campus and within their community. This award is granted annually to undergraduates from Ohio Campus Compact member institutions who exhibit outstanding leadership in their community service endeavors both on their campus and within their community.
