Defiance College Community Band to perform annual holiday concert

The music of the season will be featured as the Defiance College Community Band presents its eighth Annual Holiday Pops Concert. The concert will be held Tuesday, Dec. 9, beginning at 7 p.m. at the Defiance Community Auditorium, downtown Defiance.



DC Chamber Singers to present Dec. 5 and 6 holiday concerts

The Defiance College Chamber Singers in conjunction with the University Chorale of The Ohio State University at Lima will be presenting two holiday concerts. The first concert will be held at Market Street Presbyterian, 1100 W. Market St., Lima, on Friday, Dec. 5, at 7:30 p.m. The second performance will be held on Saturday, Dec. 6, at 7 p.m. at St. John United Church of Christ, 950 Webster St., Defiance.



Defiance College student group to sponsor silent auction

The Defiance College student chapter of Free the Slaves will host a holiday fundraising mixer on Saturday, Dec. 6, at the Serrick Campus Center. The event will feature a silent auction to raise monies to fight human trafficking. Location is the Hubbard Banquet Room from 6 to 9 p.m., and special guest will be the newly-crowned Miss Northwestern Ohio 2015, Nicole Baringer.



Defiance College to host five holiday concerts in December

Defiance College Community Band Veterans’ Concert planned for Nov. 11

The Defiance College Community Band will perform its annual “Tribute to Veterans” concert on Tuesday, Nov. 11, at 7:30 p.m. in the Defiance Community Auditorium, downtown Defiance. The concert will feature the Defiance College Chamber Singers and Defiance College Choral Union.



Black Swamp Honors Choir and Pride of Toledo Sweet Adelines featured at Defiance College Choral Festival on Nov. 2

Defiance College music programs will present the annual W. Oscar Jones Choral Festival on Sunday, Nov. 2, at 4 and 6 p.m. at St. John United Church of Christ, 950 Webster St. The performances will feature five choral ensembles including the DC Choral Union, DC Chamber Singers, DC Men’s Chorus, Black Swamp Honors Choir, and the Pride of Toledo Sweet Adelines Barbershop Chorus.



DC to hold annual Whitney Pumpkin Patch trick-or-treating

Defiance College’s annual Whitney Pumpkin Patch will be held on Friday, Oct. 31, in Whitney Hall located on Webster Street. The popular event will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. with DC students passing out candy in the residence hall. Children can also participate in games that will be held in the lobby. The event is age appropriate for children through sixth grade.



Fort Defiance Players and the DC Players present ‘Les Misérables’

Defiance College’s DC Players and the Fort Defiance Players blend a cast of college students, high school students, faculty, and community members to present “Les Misérables,” a musical based on the French historical novel by Victor Hugo. Performances will be Oct. 16-18 at 8 p.m. and Oct. 19 at 2 p.m. at the Defiance Community Auditorium.



Defiance College Homecoming nears; honorees are announced

Defiance Cares Free Clinic marks third anniversary serving local residents

The Defiance Cares Free Clinic observes its third anniversary in September. The clinic provides free primary health care to residents of Defiance County who have no medical insurance or who have a minimum $5,000 deductible through their health insurance.

Defiance College Welcomes New Faculty

June 5, 2014

Defiance College has announced the appointment of four new tenure-track faculty members. All bring extensive academic expertise and hands-on experience in their respective disciplines together with degrees from a wide variety of institutions such as, for example, the University of Michigan, University of Pittsburgh, The Ohio State University, and the University of Science and Technology in China (a national research university under the leadership of the Chinese Academy of Sciences).

Defiance College to Host Recycled Prom Dress Extravaganza April 12

April 3, 2014

After a successful recycled prom dress drive, the Defiance College Inter-Greek Council will host a Prom Dress Extravaganza for high school students and their families. During the Saturday, April 12, event, attendees will have the opportunity to purchase prom dresses and accessories for a minimal cost ranging from $5-20 for dresses and 50 cents to $5 for accessories. Shopping mentors will be on hand to assist individuals with their shopping experience.

 

Writers Group of Defiance County Arts Council sponsors Defiance College Writing Contest

The Writers Group of Defiance County Arts Council recently sponsored a writing contest for Defiance College’s Progeny literary and art magazine. Judged by Writers Group members Lynn Gilliland and Patricia Wise, awards were given for the top three creative entries.

Defiance College’s IGC hosts Yard Sale

Defiance College’s Inter Greek Counsel (IGC) is hosting a yard sale on Saturday, April 12, from 9 am to 5 pm. The IGC will provide interested parties a table and the opportunity to sell items for $10. Sellers keep any funds they make from the sale. The event will be held in the Weaner Community Center, on the corner of Stadium Drive and Webster Street.

 

Valerie Vigoda closes Defiance College’s Schomburg Series on April 8

Defiance College welcomes Valerie Vigoda for the final performance in this year’s Schomburg Series. The event will be held in Schomburg Auditorium on Tuesday, April 8, at 7 p.m. Valerie Vigoda combines vocals and violin in a one-woman loop-driven pop symphony of song, created in real time on stage. Her powerful, entrancing voice and eye-and-ear-catching six-string electric violin are augmented by the use of looping on stage to create something fresh and riveting. Audiences will be left amazed by this technology-meets-art sensation of a show.

 

McMaster School for Advancing Humanity to hold Annual Symposium April 2-3

Defiance College’s McMaster School for Advancing Humanity will hold its tenth annual McMaster Symposium on April 2 and 3 on the DC campus. The theme will be “The Question of Individual Liberties as Critical to Improving the Human Condition.” All presentations are free and open to the public.

DCCB Cabaret Concert scheduled for March 22

Defiance College’s Schomburg Series welcomes Vance Gilbert March 4

Defiance College welcomes Vance Gilbert for the next Schomburg Series performance. The event will be held in Schomburg Auditorium on Tuesday, March 4, at 7 p.m. Vance Gilbert burst onto the singer/songwriter scene in the early 90's when the buzz spread through folk clubs of the Northeast about an ex-multicultural arts teacher who was knocking them dead at open mics. A Philadelphia-area born and raised performer, audiences are sure to enjoy Gilbert's combination of humor, virtuosity, and the unexpected.

 

2014 Empty Bowls Event to be held Feb. 20

The fourteenth annual Empty Bowls event to benefit the PATH Center is planned for Thursday, Feb. 20, from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at Knights of Columbus Hall, 111 Elliott Road. The project is jointly sponsored by the Defiance College Social Work Organization and DC art department. The goal is to raise funds to help feed the hungry, with all proceeds going to the PATH Center.

Defiance College to Host Northwest Ohio Science Olympiad

On Saturday, March 1, more than 500 students in grades six through 12 will travel to Defiance College to take part in the Northwest Ohio Science Olympiad. This will be DC’s second year hosting the event, where teams of students compete in science-related challenges.

 

Defiance College to host Military Appreciation Day

Defiance College will hold a Military Appreciation Day on Saturday, Feb. 8, at the DC-Mount St. Joseph basketball doubleheader. All area military veterans and their immediate family members will be admitted to the men’s and women’s games free with a military ID.

 

Defiance College to Launch Program for College-age Students with Autism

Defiance College announced today the start of an innovative program to enable college-age students with autism to pursue a college education.  Under the program, which will begin accepting applications from qualified students immediately to enter Defiance College with the beginning of the fall semester in August, students will receive a broad range of comprehensive services to enable them to adjust to and succeed in a college environment.

 

Matt Gilroy named chief major gifts officer at Defiance College

Defiance College announced recently that Matt Gilroy has joined the Office of Institutional Advancement as senior major gifts officer. Well-known in the community, Gilroy previously held the positions of executive director of the ProMedica Defiance Regional Hospital Foundation and assistant director of the Defiance County Community Improvement Corporation.

Honors, Dean’s Lists Announced for Fall Semester 2013

Each semester Defiance College recognizes students who have attained an outstanding level of academic excellence by naming them to either the Dean’s list or the school honors list. The honors list is for students achieving a grade point average of 3.5 or higher and enrolled in 6-11 semester hours for which letter grades are given. Students who have achieved a grade point average of 3.5 or higher and are enrolled in 12 or more semester hours for which letter grades are given are named to the Dean’s list.

The concert will feature saxophone soloist Master Sergeant Stanley E. George, performing the virtuosic ragtime solo “Nola” and a selection called “’Saxophobia.”

DC Cares Free Clinic celebrating two-year anniversary

Defiance College students and community partners are celebrating the second anniversary of the DC Cares Free Clinic. The successful partnership between Defiance College, ProMedica Defiance Regional Hospital, Mercy Hospital of Defiance, and Mercy Clinic has enabled the clinic to serve more than 250 patients since it opened in 2011.

 

DC Marching Band makes first appearance

BandThe first-ever Defiance College Marching Band made its debut on Saturday, performing at the DC-Adrian football game. Sporting impressive uniforms and an air of pride and excitement, the band and director Bridget Leahy displayed all of the hard work that they have been putting forth the past several weeks.
