Welcome to the 2009-2010 Schomburg Series
In a time of economic challenge on many levels, it is my desire and that of Defiance College to continue to offer an eclectic and powerful menu of performances to the Defiance community and surrounding areas.
Although we have experienced losses in grant acquisitions and other revenue, the Schomburg Series will not be compromised. Quite the opposite, I believe this year’s series is one of the best yet, involving a wide range of performance genre.
I was able to collaborate with my friend and mentor Dick Stroede and the Defiance Community Cultural Council (DCCC) on two of the five performances, helping to bring high quality acts onto our campus, into our city, and to the surrounding region. I would personally like to thank Dr. Stroede and DCCC for helping to offset costs and keeping the quality high.
The following list of individual acts includes a wide range of performances which will please a diverse population of all ages.
You will find high energy jazz, thought-provoking ballads, a bit of rock and be-bop boogie, rhythmic percussion and dance, and a special Celtic Christmas presentation during the month of December.
Please take time to review this program, the brief artists’ biographies, times, dates and locations, and help up support this fantastic series in the 2009-2010 Schomburg season.
Sincerely,
Douglas R. Fiely

Not just another funk/world/rock/jazz/classical ensemble, Eclectica is a virtuoso groove event. This genre-defying band features the five-time Grammy Award-winning drumming of Roy “Futureman” Wooten of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones and electric violin virtuoso Tracy Silverman, heralded by the BBC as “the greatest living exponent of the electric violin.” Bass legend Steve Forrest completes the ensemble. Eclectica weaves sound-pieces together with a groove that is alive from the first note to the last encore, with sing-along choruses and creative jams that can lead in any direction. With three-part vocals and inspired synchronicity, Eclectica is a celebration and a concert on the same stage.

Ball in the House is a tour de force of vocal sound that must be heard and seen to be believed. This five-man, pop/R and B “mouth band” hails from Boston, where they live and operate out of when not touring on the road. Originally formed as a quartet by founder and current vocal percussionist Jon J., Ball in the House has gone through numerous phases and changes on its way to becoming one of the best-known and most-loved acts in the a cappella community today.
