Join us for 2014 Welcome Week.  Each day is packed with events and activities that allow you to laugh, learn, and connect with others.  Please note that ALL events are required for first-year students regardless of commuter/residence status and sport affiliation, unless otherwise noted. 



Friday, August 22


10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.

First-Year and Second-Year Student Move-In

Residence Halls

Leave the heavy lifting to us. Move-in crew members will be available throughout the day to help transfer all your gear into your residence hall room. Also, the Yellow Jacket Band will be playing music for you at 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm!

St. John's UCC Picnic

Outside McReynolds Hall

Take a break from unpacking boxes and join us for our annual luncehon sponsored by St. John’s United Church of Christ.


4:30 p.m.

First-Year Residence Hall Floor Meeting
See your RA for location

Connect with members of your floor and learn about the procedures of the hall. *Required for First-Year Residential Students ONLY

Commuter Student Panel

Connect with other students who are going to be commuting to campus and learn about what we have available for our commuters!

Community Dinner
Serrick Dining Hall

Eat dinner with the students residing on your floor (residence students) or with other commuter students (if you commute). Res students will walk together from the halls and commuter students will meet at Serrick!


7:00 p.m.
Circle of Friends
Location TBA

Circle of Friends will provide you an opportunity to meet members of the First-Year Class. If you have ever heard of speed dating, you will understand Circle of Friends. We will have two groups, a music rotation, and a whole new understanding of whom you’re going to classes with!


8:00 p.m. – 12:00 a.m.

Come on down to the DC Carnival where we’ll have popcorn, sno-cones, cotton candy, big red photo chair, rock wall, obstacle course, mechanical bull, inflatables, a DJ and more!

First-Year Service Day
Defiance City

The annual event where first year students team up with local community service organizations to share their time and talent in a variety of volunteer projects. By taking part in First-Year Service Day, students experience one of the key pillars of Defiance College's mission: "To Know, To Understand, To Lead, To Serve."

Community dining in Serrick Dining Hall. You’ll be able to enjoy lunch with a new group of students! We’ll let you know where you’re sitting based on your last name!


1:30 – 3:30 p.m.
ASD Diversity Training & Ice Breaker Activity
Hubbard Banquet Room

Diversity Awareness: Students will participate in activity designed to teach students about the multicultural environment of a college campus. Students will work together to gain perspective and understanding about the experiences of students who are different from themselves.


4:00 – 7:30 p.m.
Siesta Social & Mexican dinner on the Quad
Between the Res Halls

The Residence Life Staff is ready to hook you up with some relaxation time! Head out between the Res Halls to do some kickball, sand volleyball, slip n’ slide, play yard games, listen to music and more! Later on around 6:00 pm we’ll serve a Mexican style dinner for you on the Serrick Quad.


8:00 p.m. – 12:00 a.m.
Laser Tag
The George (Courts 1-4)

Vest up and go on a mission with your peers for a round of Laser Tag. You’ll enter a dome filled with haze and two teams and you’ll try to score as many points as you can for you and your team!


Sunday, August 24

Feel free to join one of our local congregations for worship this morning. A list of times and locations is available from Jan Bechtel in the Office of Spiritual Life in Hubbard 126.

Start your day off by eating a yummy brunch with your peers. When you get to the Hall, we will be separating you by your first names so you can eat lunch with a new group of people!

Project 701 Presentation

Project 701 is a really innovative student-run non-profit at DC. It gives our students an opportunity to develop, create, manage, and run their own service projects; to develop their entrepreneurial and leadership skills; to get great experience for their resumes; and to do meaningful service that makes a difference in people's lives. Incoming freshmen will hear from current DC students who run Project 701 about the range of different projects they can participate in and how to get involved.


Sexual Assault Prevention Workshops
2:00 – 4:00 p.m.

We’ll be having talk-back sessions about Sexual Assault Prevention and give you the opportunity to ask questions, learn about campus procedure and know your right and responsibility as a student and citizen.

Ice Cream Social
President’s Home

Meet your orientation leaders in front of the front door of McReynolds. All first-year students are cordially invited to attend an ice cream social at the President’s home.

Time for more community dinner time and socialization with your peers! When you come to the dining hall, we’ll hand you a card with a color on it. You’ll sit with a new group of students and start learning who everyone is on campus in no time!

Need some supplies for that Res Room? Or just want to tag along for the ride? We’ll have shuttles hitting up Walmart throughout the night to get you what you need! More details TBA.

This event is an All Honors Orientation for all First-Year, Sophomore, Junior and Senior Honors students.



Monday, August 25

Travel Safety and Security Training
Schomburg Auditorium

Meet with the Dean of the McMaster School for Advancing Humanity to learn about Domestic travel safety and policies. This will last approximately one hour and is a required session since many students will be traveling throughout their years here at DC!

Weaner Gym

Celebrate the beginning of the year followed by an outdoor BBQ on the Alumni Lawn.

Common Read Groups
All Across Campus

This year's Common Read is Reality is Broken by Jane McGonigal. All First Year students receive a copy of the book at Orientation, read it over the summer, and get the opportunity to discuss the book with their peers and other Defiance College faculty and staff in assigned small groups on the afternoon of Convocation. Group and location assignments will be posted outside Schomburg Auditorium in the morning around 9:30 am.

Major Open Houses

Travel across the different buildings on campus and check out the different majors we have on campus by going to their open houses. More details coming soon.


8:00 p.m.
Drive-In Movie
Between Residence Halls

Enjoy the excitement of a drive-in movie without going anywhere. We’ll be watching the Captain America: Winter Soldier on the lawn! We’ll provide pop and popcorn you just have to bring something comfy to lay on!

Common Read Author Speaks
Schomburg Auditorium

Gregg Fraley is this year's Common Read Speaker. Gregg is an American writer, speaker, and consultant in the area of innovation and commercial creativity, who was named a Distinguished Leader by the Creative Education Foundation. He’s the author of the first ever business fable about creative problem solving, Jack’s Notebook, and he’s a thought leader in corporate innovation. Gregg will speak on many of the key themes from the First Year Common Read, Jane McGonigal's Reality is Broken, as well as his experience in technology and creativity development.

Learn more about the music programs at DC and how you can get involved throughout the year. DC’s music faculty will be hosting a special performance at 4:30 pm in Schomburg just for you! Learn more about the music programs at DC and how you can get involved throughout the year and enjoy some yummy goodies provided by Music Programs.

Foam Party
Between the Res Halls

The ultimate combination of DJ, intelligent lighting, and sound together with the magic of foam to create an awesome high energy atmosphere. Foam parties have been synonymous with “Spring Break” is coming to DC!
The DJ will feature the latest urban, top 40, and dance tracks coordinated with an awesome intelligent light show.
Be prepared for a FUN, PROVOCATIVE, and EXCITING campus activities program!

Mind Tripping is an eerie walk through perceptions, illusions, thoughts and working through the human intellect. It will include thought reading, predictions, mind control, psychological illusions and more!

Part-Time Job Fair

Serrick Campus Center

This job fair is open to all students and will provide an opportunity for you to interact and learn more about local business and restaurant employment.


5:30 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.

Office of Intercultural Relations Dinner and Dessert

Hubbard Banquet Room

Join the Office of Intercultural Relations (OIR) in a dinner-style informational that will provide you with all the programs and functions of the office. Presentations by organizations within OIR will provide any additional information students may need. Giveaways will happen throughout the night!

Shadowland Show
Schomburg Auditorium

Who doesn’t love a little hair standing on the back of their neck? Or a tingling up the spine when something eerie is happening? Married 2 Magic folks are going to re-create some of these fun ghostly experiences with our show, Shadowland. The show is a celebration of the times you remember sitting around the camp fire trading ghost stories or sitting up late in front of the TV when you were young watching Sammy Terry.
A sneak peek of the show includes: A ghost from Central State Hospital will make an appearance. Someone might levitate with the help of some unworldly force. If you are in the mood for something different then step into the world of the ghostly, other worldly, Shadowland.

Relax and celebrate completing your first week of school at the Student Life RAVE. Free drinks, both alcoholic (limited to 3) and non-alcoholic, will be served along with a night of food, music, neon EVERYTHING and dancing.
